Description

The Niagara River's furious power cut away a massive gorge at the Niagara Escarpment(near Lewiston NY) where the falls originated. Over the years, this cutting action has actually moved the entire Niagara Falls to where it is located now. The falls are located 7 miles from their original position and dump a magnificent volume of water Approximately 350 feet from Lake Erie above to Lake Ontario down below. On the Canadian side the cliffs of the Horseshoe falls are about 200 feet high. These measurements can change over the course of a year by several inches to a foot or more depending on geological conditions.

The Niagara River was born 12,000-14,000 years ago during the last glacial event. The stratified rock through which the Niagara River cuts its gorge represents a history that dates back to the Paleozoic Era, hundreds of millions of years ago.
