Niagara Falls State Park Information, American Falls & Canadian Falls

24 Buffalo Ave. Niagara Falls, NY 14303

Niagara Falls State Park information. The Canadian and American Falls are just 20 minutes from Buffalo New York, the Niagara River's furious power cut away a massive gorge at the Niagara Escarpment.(near Lewiston NY) This is where the falls originated. Over the years, this cutting action has actually moved the entire falls to where it is located now. The falls are located 7 miles from their original position. The falls dump a magnificent volume of water. Two Niagara river channels (east & west) combine after they pass Grand Island. This water rapidly approaches the edge of the falls and drops approximately 350 feet to Lake Ontario down below.

By the Canadian Falls, the cliffs of the Horseshoe falls are about 200 feet high. These measurements can change over the course of a year by several inches to a foot or more depending on geological conditions.

Niagara Falls History

The Niagara River was born 12,000-14,000 years ago during the last glacial event. The stratified rock which the Niagara River cuts its gorge represents a history that dates back to the Paleozoic Era, hundreds of millions of years ago. There is a hiking trail called Devil's Hole. It is located along the American side gorge. Two unrelated American Indian nations occupied this area at one time. There is a cave along the trail. It is a natural formation in 430,000,000 year old rock.

Luna Island & Goat Island

Luna Island is a small island between the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls.

Goat Island (Previously, Iris Island) is a small island in the Niagara River, between the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. Not to worry, nobody lives on Goat Island. It's a destination just for tourists visiting Niagara Falls State Park :)

My marriage ceremony was at Niagara Falls just outside the State Park. Afterwards we all went on the Maid of the mist boat ride. I could not believe how close the boats get to the horseshoe falls on the Canadian side. It was just spectacular to say the least. Plan on getting wet if deciding to go.

Took a trip last summer in the Toyota Odyssey with the kids to Niagara falls state park. Everybody had a great time so much to explore.
Prepare to get wet. You can buy a raincoat for a few bucks, highly recommended. Don’t miss the maid of the most and the cave of the winds at the American falls!

Niagara falls parking was easy to find. Was pretty reasonable too. Had the most fun at the cave of the winds and maid of the mist boat ride. The only hitch was the chinese bus tour buses blocked our way for about ten minutes

The boat ride under Niagara falls was exciting. I took a lot of pictures for my art projects. If you plan on gambling in Niagara falls there are three casinos. The Casino Niagara which was the first casino in Niagara Falls Canada or USA, the Seneca Niagara casino (first in Niagara Falls NY) and finally The Fallview casino in Canada. My pick of the three is the Fallsview casino. Although parking was free at the Seneca Niagara Falls Casino.
