Albright Knox Art Gallery

The Albright Knox Art Gallery Building began as the Albright Building and was later re-named Albright Knox Art Gallery in honor of contributions made by the Knox family.  Then in 2016 it was re-named Albright Knox Gundlach Art Museum in recognition of contributions made by Jeffrey Gundlach, a fine art collector.

About The Albright Knox Gallery

The Albright Knox "Gundlach" Art Gallery is part of the Buffalo NY Fine Arts Academy. The academy was founded in 1862. It is of the oldest public arts organizations in the country. Construction began in 1890 and was anticipated to be open for the 1901 Pan-AM Exposition. It wasn't actually completed until 1905. Although construction of the project didn't meet the deadline, everyone is pleased with the outcome. The Albright Knox Art Building is one of the most beautiful buildings anywhere. A work of art in its own right.

A bit of history

John J. Albright a philanthropist, initially funded the construction of the Albright Art Gallery. The building was designed by a local architect named Edward Brodhead Green.  In 1962, a new addition was made to the gallery through contributions by Seymour H. Knox, his family and many other donors. At this time the museum was named Albright Knox Art Gallery. The new building was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Architect Gordon Bunshaft who helped in the design is noted for the Lever House in New York City. In 2016 Jeffery Gundlach contributed a significant amount of funding. This has helped the Art Gallery to move forward in its creative endeavors. The Albright Knox Art Gallery is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Past Art Gallery Exhibits

At one time the Albright Knox Art Gallery was home to the ancient statue of "Artemis and the Stag" This bronze sculpture was made between 100 BC and 100 AD.  It was first discovered and excavated in Rome in the 1920's. The statue was at auction and sold for close to 50 million US dollars.

Not too far up the street is where the annual Allentown Art Festival is held. It's in the Allentown preservation district between Tupper and North streets.
