The Erie Canal system extends to Lockport NY and beyond. It is Just 20 minutes from Buffalo NY where work on the Canal began. The Lockport Cave system is quite a rare find. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built by Erie Canal workers in the late 1800's and it is a true testament to their hard work. It took many workers and dynomite to build this extraordinary marval. The tunnel was designed to provide a source of water to the hydro electric intakes that power the city.
It is a novice level walk/hike through the 2100 foot long tunnel carved out of 400,000,000 year old rock. Tickets for the guided tours include both the hike and boat ride and cannot be purchased separately. The complete tour runs about 70 minutes.
